Flying Tomato Festival™ – or just “Tomato Festival” is the World’s biggest Food Fight™. Inspired by similar events in Europe – just imagine 5,000 people singing, dancing, and smearing tomatoes on each other. It is pure adrenaline and fun.
Other mud or color events get participants dirty – but nothing comes close to Flying Tomato Festival™ – PEOPLE LOVE IT!!!
Get ready for more music, more spectacle, and even more tomatoes – and we have incorporated an arena with relics from the ancient European World. Experience the sites, sounds and sensations of ancient Rome while rocking out at an amazing party / concert, eating delicious local food before smearing pals with a few thousand tomatoes. Check out our video HERE.
Each Tomato Festival™ participant will receive a limited edition event T-shirt, saucy protective goggles with branded headband, old school wristbands and cool temporary event tattoos – plus all the tomatoes you can throw!
After the food fight the music and party continues as participants can wash / cool off in our Rinse Cycle™ to round out the World’s Sauciest Party™! Come enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience participants tell us is the biggest adrenaline rush ever – and unlike anything they’ve ever tried before.
Flying Tomato Festival™ is for friends, families, couples, singles – people who like good clean fun – or really messy food fights. Participants arrive at a concert like venue where you can sing, dance, or just hang out. The party is for REAL.
At a certain time, our Emcee’s will review THE RULES with the crowd and announce THE COUNTDOWN. Participants will then vacate the arena and the piles of tomatoes will be un-covered. Then – IT HAPPENS: Close to an hour of messy-tomato-throwing-insane-fun that you will absolutely love and you will NEVER FORGET. It is adrenaline and laughs mixed with a concert environment and heart pounding music. AMAZING!!
After you’re done smearing marinara on a few thousand of you new best friends – the party continues with the after party RINSE CYCLE – where participants get hosed down with pressure washers and more amazing music.
YOU can do this! Our participants range from young kids with their parents, high school to college students surging with energy, to 60+ grandparents checking this off their bucket list! The first 5 minutes of the Tomato Food Fight is the most intense and if you wonder if you should go right into the middle, we promise you can still have a blast avoiding that immediate rush. There are enough tomatoes for everyone – so what are you waiting for! Let’s get saucy!
When we started we wanted to create an amazing event with perfectly executed operations – and share it with people everywhere to create memories, laughs – and an incredible life experience.
We didn’t know going in that throwing tomatoes – which are food – would create a wave of feedback, concern and some criticism. We had landed in the middle of a controversial debate about FOOD WASTE, and feeding the HUNGRY.
Instead of stopping or turning to hide, we decided to get involved. Our goal is not to pretend – but now to embrace who we are – and that with our participants we can make a huge difference FIGHTING HUNGER, educating about FOOD WASTE, and by creating a reason to have dialogue about the issues – and to do something about it.
Direct Donations: At every Tomato Festival™ event we donate a minimum of 1,000 meals to our national charity partner Action Against Hunger™. They are engaged in fighting hunger all over the world and we are proud to work with such a reputable organization. Our 1,000 meal minimum happens no matter how many participants attend our event. After the first 1,000 participants we donate at least 1 additional meal for each new participant.
Food & Fund Drives: Tomato Festival reaches out to local food bands to help gather food and funding donations from our participants. Tomato Festival participants who donate get an exclusive “FIGHT HUNGER, THROW TOMATOES” bracelet. The only way to get this bracelet is to donate to the food drive. 100% of the food and funding we gather goes directly to the local food bank.
Participants at Flying Tomato Festival™ can also fund raise for a specific cause they choose.
Perhaps the greatest difference we make is creating conversation about fighting hunger and feeding the hungry – and keeping the conversation going. We get lots of people angry that we waste food. Color Events use 3+ ears of corn to create powdered color, Mud runs consume water and resources – there are benefit concerts and dinners all over the world – and food is consumed as a means to help activate an audience. We love the passionate dialogue about food waste our event creates. It is one of the most incredible gifts we never intended to receive – and are grateful for a platform where we can reach people and invite them to help us feed the hungry and spread the word about food waste.
In addition to Flying Tomato Festival™ making a direct financial contribution to Fight Hunger, conducting food and fund drives at our events, and encouraging participants to fundraise, we decide there is more we can do. We are encouraging participants to donate their shoes after the event and we donate these shoes to local non-profits.
We also work with local non-profits who want to help recruit volunteers to assist with staffing our events. For each volunteer they recruit and who attends – we make a financial contribution to the non-profit.
To the extent possible we use “Type 2” tomatoes. These tomatoes either became too ripe and would be disposed of – or are unfit for commercial sale for another reason (such as size, shape, damage). We didn’t know that more than 1 BILLION tomatoes are wasted EVERY YEAR. Some of these tomatoes are composted, and many are wasted and fill our landfills.
It is awesome that we get to utilize a few thousand of these type 2 tomatoes at our events – and by doing that create so much awareness and passion about food waste and fighting hunger.
Thanks to thousands of participants and haters – the conversation continues. Many participants just want to come have a good time with their crew – they are having a blast and getting involved in fighting hunger! Others are engaging in food and fund raising activities before, during and after our event. They are activating awareness about food waste. Some people are offended that an event like ours exists – critical of the idea of food waste. To those we ask you to understand that many of the tomatoes we use would have been disposed of or wasted anyway – and ask you to consider the fun, the food raise and the good we bring. If you are still upset – share with us what you have been doing to feed the hungry in your community or to counter food waste and we seriously will pass it on!
There are 2 smaller areas dedicated to kids in 2 groups:
We don’t just say “Let’s Get Saucy” – we want you to get as swaggy as you’ve ever been. Throw on your light blue tuxedo or that old wedding dress and let’s do this! Generally plan on whatever you wear getting completely soaked in tomatoes – so if it is light colored it will change colors. Many people throw old clothes away. Please wear CLOSED TOE SHOES. Flip-flops will break, slip and leave your feet very vulnerable! We have a “TRICKED OUT TOMATO” award for the best costume, and we have a team award for the best dressed team. So get yourself geared up and ready to go!
